Mary Magdalena was persecuted and haunted when she arrived by boat on the coast of Gaul, today known as France. I wanted to depict her in a more historical aspect, what it was really like, a moment in time...
A moment in time is a continuous theme running through my work. Something that is hidden has always fascinated me. A place, a winding road, directive motion pointing to something that cannot be seen.
The work for Magdalena was shot in Germany, close to the French border, near Alsace, which makes it more realistic. Magdalena’s cautious glance depicts her fear of being found, running from her persecutors.
I would like the viewer to have the ability to see what it was like, to witness what might have happened.
