As a woman, I’ve been held down, ridiculed, and subjected to verbal abuse. I was held back in middle school to ensure I was emotionally ready for high school which had a negative effect on my self esteem. I've been told I wouldn't amount to anything, and that no one would love me after my divorce. The experiences make me who I am today, and through it all I've succeeded.
I use my personal experience when I photograph women. My images serve as an affirmation to my own existence as a woman, and to empower the women photographed by capturing their strength and inner beauty. This work was created on a mountain ranch above the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, CA. She is shot through the window of a structure on the property in a state of peaceful beauty. She is captured in quiet moments of reflection, and only she knows what she is thinking, what her experience has been and where her strength lies. Like Magdalena she is a mystery.
I am a self-taught photographer, living in San Francisco, CA.
